Your Questions, Answered
-
Your first visit begins with a comprehensive conversation about your health, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve with treatment. Esra may ask about areas such as sleep, stress, digestion, activity, and other aspects of your health that can help provide a more complete picture.
She will then perform an assessment, discuss her treatment approach with you, and provide your first acupuncture treatment when appropriate. Your initial visit is longer than a typical follow-up so there is plenty of time to understand your concerns and answer your questions.
-
Follow-up visits begin with a brief reassessment of how you have been feeling and how you responded to your previous treatment. Esra will adjust your treatment based on your progress and current symptoms.
Because much of your health history has already been established during your initial visit, follow-ups generally allow more of the appointment to be focused on treatment.

Patients seek acupuncture for many different reasons, most commonly pain and mobility. But Acupuncture helps with a great deal more than that, including stress & anxiety, sleep, fertility & women's health, Thyroid health, digestive concerns, general wellness and more.
Acupuncture isn't a substitute for necessary medical care, and Esra may recommend evaluation by another healthcare professional when a concern falls outside the appropriate scope of acupuncture care.
-
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and are very different from the needles typically used for injections or blood draws.
Most patients experience little or no discomfort when the needles are inserted. You may notice sensations such as heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull ache around some acupuncture points. Many patients find the treatment itself deeply relaxing.
-
There isn't one treatment schedule that is appropriate for everyone.
The number and frequency of visits depend on factors such as what you're being treated for, how long the condition has been present, its severity, your overall health, and how you respond to treatment.
After your initial evaluation, Esra will discuss a recommended treatment plan with you and adjust it as your progress becomes clearer.
-
Wear comfortable clothing and have a light meal before your appointment rather than arriving on an empty stomach.
Please bring or have available a current list of medications and supplements and any relevant information about your health history. New patients should also complete their intake and consent forms before arriving whenever possible.
-
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. Depending on the areas being treated, Esra may need access to areas such as your arms, legs, abdomen, or back. Appropriate draping and privacy will always be provided when necessary.
-
Acupuncture is generally well tolerated, but temporary effects can occur. These may include minor bruising or bleeding at an insertion site, temporary soreness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or a short-term change in symptoms.
Esra will discuss relevant risks with you before treatment and encourages patients to communicate anything unusual they experience during or after a visit.

Papatya does not bill insurance companies directly. Payment is due at the time of service. However, if your health plan includes out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we can provide a “Superbill” - a document that you may submit to your insurer for reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement vary by plan, so we recommend checking directly with your insurance company.
-
Generally, acupuncture is an eligible medical expense for HSA and FSA funds. Papatya accepts major payment cards, including eligible HSA/FSA cards. Eligibility can depend on your particular plan, so patients should confirm requirements with their plan administrator when necessary.
